Well – it did not turn out as I was planning! Which is – as they say – why you actually play the game rather than just assume everything will work perfectly – it never does – or hardly ever. It’s stuff going badly wrong that makes wargaming fun, particularly if you are playing solo! First, as I feared, the Irish were able to quickly break the City of Perth militia at their first opportunity (although it took some off-the-charts shooting!)
Still I may be able to disengage Drummond’s horse and catch MacDonnell’s in the rear (which will likely break them!) OR attack MacDonald of Keppoch (while continuing to pin most of Laghtnan’s). With a little luck I can then roll up the Royalist left flank. Unfortunately I could not gain the initiative! (yet another horrible die roll!!)
Even though playing the Covenanter side I try to look at opportunities for the opposition (within the constraints of their operational orders). I notice that Laghtnan’s right flank is no longer covered by Drummond’s horse and gamble by attempting a three-action move – which the dice (and a judicious expenditure of a Leadership Point – white cube) – permit! Functioning now as if they are commanded shot Laghtnan’s musketeers rapid move to within range of Elcho’s foot.
Arriving near the bottom of the slope of Burghmuir Hill, Laghtnan’s musketeers deliver the first of several effective volleys at Elcho’s foot. Although operating out of normal regimental command range, MacColla supplies the necessary coordination amongst Laghtnan’s dispersed companies.
To make matters worse the Royalist left flank swings into action and eliminates any hope I have of doing more damage with Drummond’s horse. Thanks to poor activation rolls by both sides the action on my left flank (between Montrose and Scott , seen in the distance in the photo below) becomes stalemated.
Kilpont’s fire breaks Lord Drummond’s horse (and kills His Lordship!) This now means that I have TWO unit casualties and can not lose another!
The rest of the Irish Brigade halts its advance and also begins pouring shot into the Covenanter front line. This new tactic is rapidly destroying any hope that I have of somehow halting the Royalist advance on my center.
My last chance is to get my flank units wheeled in to fire at both flanks of the Irish. I have tried this before but poor activation rolls prevented it from happening. My luck does not change and the initiative passed back to the Royalist side which ends the affair in short order!
Well it was fun while it lasted. I’ll post some post game reflections shortly.
