Wargaming Tippermuir III

Well – it did not turn out as I was planning! Which is – as they say – why you actually play the game rather than just assume everything will work perfectly – it never does – or hardly ever. It’s stuff going badly wrong that makes wargaming fun, particularly if you are playing solo! First, as I feared, the Irish were able to quickly break the City of Perth militia at their first opportunity (although it took some off-the-charts shooting!)

MacDonnell's attacks Elcho's foot (who is firing defensively) while their right flank musket sleeve prepares to fire on the City of Perth Militia

Still I may be able to disengage Drummond’s horse and catch MacDonnell’s in the rear (which will likely break them!) OR attack MacDonald of Keppoch (while continuing to pin most of Laghtnan’s). With a little luck I can then roll up the Royalist left flank. Unfortunately I could not gain the initiative! (yet another horrible die roll!!)

The highwater mark of the Covenanter cavalry attacks, Although taking heavy casualties, Lord Drummond's horse begins to make headway against Laghtnan's foot

Even though playing the Covenanter side I try to look at opportunities for the opposition (within the constraints of their operational orders). I notice that Laghtnan’s right flank is no longer covered by Drummond’s horse and gamble by attempting a three-action move – which the dice (and a judicious expenditure of a Leadership Point – white cube) – permit! Functioning now as if they are commanded shot Laghtnan’s musketeers rapid move to within range of Elcho’s foot.

Momentum begins to shift as MacDonnell's superb musketry (in the distance) breaks the City of Perth militia, While Laghtnan's right flank circumvents Lord Drummond's cavalry and quickly advances toward Lord Elcho's foot

Arriving near the bottom of the slope of Burghmuir Hill, Laghtnan’s musketeers deliver the first of several effective volleys at Elcho’s foot. Although operating out of normal regimental command range, MacColla supplies the necessary coordination amongst Laghtnan’s dispersed companies.

Laghtnan's right flank musket sleeve pours heavy fire into Lord Elcho's foot. Alasdair MacColla bridges the command and control between Laghtnan's regimental command and their commanded shot

To make matters worse the Royalist left flank swings into action and eliminates any hope I have of doing more damage with Drummond’s horse. Thanks to poor activation rolls by both sides the action on my left flank (between Montrose and Scott , seen in the distance in the photo below) becomes stalemated.

Lord Kilpont finally gets both the Perthshire Militia and MacDonald of Keppoch's archers engages against Lord Drummond's horse

Kilpont’s fire breaks Lord Drummond’s horse (and kills His Lordship!) This now means that I have TWO unit casualties and can not lose another!

Lord Kilpont's fire manged to kill Lord Drummond and broke his command allowing the rest of Laghtnan's foot to come up. Laghtnan's commanded shot continues to tear holes in Lord Elcho's line

With Drummond’s horse gone,  the rest of Laghtnan’s foot now  also comes up.Laghtnan’s commanded shot continues to tear holes in Lord Elcho’s line

The rest of the Irish Brigade halts its advance and also begins pouring shot into the Covenanter front line. This new tactic is rapidly destroying any hope that I have of somehow halting the Royalist advance on my center.

Both MacDonnell's and O'Cahan's are now also pouring fire into the Covenanter front line

My last chance is to get my flank units wheeled in to fire at both flanks of the Irish. I have tried this before but poor activation rolls prevented it from happening. My luck does not change and the initiative passed back to the Royalist side which ends the affair in short order!

Yet another devastating volley from Laghtnan's finally breaks Lord Elcho's foot

Well it was fun while it lasted. I’ll post some post game reflections shortly.

  1. Thanks Bart! Actually they did have this outcome! But I think you mean overall?
When I’m not a leveller I’m royalist – a confusing position but adaptable to all situations!
